Abstract

The Romanian modern drama was marked (till 1965, n. b.) by two plays: „The Manole Handicraftsman” (1927) by writer and philosopher Lucian Blaga and „The Death of an Artist” (1964) by Horia Lovinescu. The first was an expressionist illustration of the idea that patterns of the Modern Age are coming from the Indo-European complex primitivism; the second was a metaphorical answer to Socialist Realism, supporting the idea that behind an artistic act lays a mythological and idealistic mentality. Our study investigates the Balkanic roots and variants of The Manole Handicraftsman Myth and their evolution according to the views of Mircea Eliade. The next step will make subtle connections between the myth heritage that survived in the regional popular ballads and the modern drama. Even if the study does not directly link the mythological and the modern mentalities, we try to demonstrate that a connection over ages is activated when the nowadays artists create by regaining the lost paradise of unity between the essence and the form.

  • Cristian Stamatoiu, Universitatea de Arte din Târgu-Mureș, România

Cristian Stamatoiu is Professor PhD Habil. at the University of Arts in Târgu- Mureş, where he teaches The Hystory of Theatre course. Former lectorate at the University of Strasbourg (France), he approached the means of the cultural anthropology. He asserted himself as a „Caragiale-logist” in continuing the „critical school” of the late Professor V. Fanache (Cluj-Napoca University, Romania). Titles such as: „I.L. Caragiale and the Media Pathologies” (1999) and „The-World-after- Caragiale. His Pattern and his Projection” (2003), as well as a multitude of articles published in Romania and abroad, originally highlighted the timeliness of I.L. Caragiale’s works. The critical approach was then accomplished by comparing Caragiale’s characters’ linguistic deficiencies and those of our contemporaries in „Communicational «Weakest Chain» in the World of Caragiale and the World of Today” (2015). In this context, the author has also released the critical concept of „Caragiale-world”. He also published the bilingual Romanian/French selection: „Popular «Franco-aphonic» etymologies in the Romanian dramaturgy” (2015) and some communications regarding the complexity of the Blagian dramatic and philosophic works.
