A Dialogue Across Centuries: Greek Theatre Then and Now
978-606-082-072-7 UNATC Press & 978-606-14-2187-9 Universitaria Craiova Press
Edited by Andreas Markantonatos, Mihaela Beţiu and Despina Kosmopoulou
The project is a collaboration between the Programme of Postgraduate Studies "Performing Arts" (PEA) of the Hellenic Open University, the Centre for Ancient Rhetoric and Drama (CARD) of the University of the Peloponnese, and the CONCEPT academic journal, edited by I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest (UNATC).
The book was launched during the first Inter-Balkan Conference organized in Thessaloniki on March 16-17, 2025 entitled Creation of an Inter-Balkan Network of Performing Arts: Terms and Conditions.

”These contemporary approaches to Greek theatre, characterised by their synthetic depth and bold intellectual aspirations, allow us to break free from the myopic perception that our lives remain untouched by the realities that surround us—an illusion that is often at odds with the unmistakable signs of change. It is within this framework that the urgent necessity emerges for us to experience our existence as an honest endeavour to mitigate violence, above all by alleviating the suffering that human beings, all too often, inflict upon one another.”
ANDREAS MARKANTONATOS
”Ancient Greek theatre is not just a cultural legacy but a living matrix of human reflection. It is not a relic but a vital body—a flexible structure where the past is not merely remembered but constantly reinvented. In every adaptation, Greek tragedy becomes our mirror, reflecting the crises of the present with the same force with which it once questioned ancient destiny. Contemporary Perspectives on Greek Theatre explores the dialogue between tradition and innovation, revealing how Greek tragedy continues to inspire, challenge, and transform contemporary performing arts. The deep connections between Greek and Romanian theatre practitioners, through academic and stage collaborations, demonstrate the enduring legacy of this heritage within the European cultural space. An essential read for researchers and artists seeking the essence of theatre today.”
LIVIU LUCACI
”The publication of this hefty volume is an eloquent testament to the deep relationship and friendship amongst the Balkan peoples. The Modern Greek theatre is known to have had inseparable ties with Romania since the 17th century. Therefore the aim of this publication is to promote Greek theatre abroad, both ancient Greek Drama and contemporary Greek theatre. We hope that this volume, specially designed to complement the 1st Inter-Balkan Conference: Creation of an Inter-Balkan Network of Performing Arts: Terms and Conditions, will inaugurate a series of publications and collaborations with the I.L. Caragiale UNATC in Bucharest. More than that, it will serve as a useful example for deeper cooperation with universities and artistic bodies of other European countries and beyond.”
DESPINA KOSMOPOULOU
”This comprehensive volume is the culmination of the last three years of collaborative work in a very fascinating field for any theatre peer: ancient and contemporary Greek theatre. Co-authored by renowned Greek theorists and practitioners, the book attempts to filter multiple associated cultural elements and motifs through the lens of contemporary interpretative analysis.”
