Abstract

Sean Baker is a contemporary American independent filmmaker who has been rising to prominence, culminating in his win at the prestigious Palme d’Or awards in 2024. However, what sets his career apart is the way he began - by making independent films with almost no budget, which have been labeled by critics as American Neorealism; he has remained true to his approach in spite of his limited budget and his notoriety has increased with each film. This article aims to unpack the manner in which his festival success has spun organically from his approach to making films, therefore analyzing his authorship and solution-oriented production mindset. By assessing his artistic identity, this article attempts to portray how Sean Baker represents a positive example of an organic route to festival acclaim.
