The Role of Intimacy Coordinators in Theatre and Film

Abstract

The article aims to discuss the importance of coordinators in both theatre performances and film projects, focusing on what they must consider in order to provide the actor with the most suitable work climate, as well as the actor’s reluctance to adapt to change. The art of acting, by its very nature, requires the actor to access very personal feelings and emotions, which makes them unable to eliminate the stress caused by the problems which arise during role preparation. Recent social changes cannot but affect the actor’s work process, and the essay explores how these nuances are reflected in the discourse of producers – those ultimately held accountable if something goes wrong in a project. The essay draws a parallel between how Western Europe accepts sexuality and how different things are in Romania. The specific language of theatre is different from that of cinema, and this essay aims to offer a transposition of both.

  • Ionuț Niculae, I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film, Bucharest, Romania

    Ionuț Niculae is a PhD student in his third year at the I.L. Caragiale University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. He has worked as an actor in various theatre projects, The Stranger by Yannis Mavritakis at the Point Theatre (2022), No man’s land by Danis Tanovic, Medeea, my mother by Ivan Dobcev, Hotel Europa by Goran Stefanovski at the National Theatre in Bucharest (2019), but also in various film projects, Reostat by Teodora Ana Mihai (2024), Imaculat by Monica Stan (2022), Field of poppies by Eugen Jebeleanu (2021), In Blue by Yaap Van Heusden (2018), The World is Mine by Nicolae Constantin Tănase (2015), Rocker by Marian Crișan (2013), and since 2019 has been directing the Brightside Drama teen theatre company, through which he has produced a number of plays that tackle various social issues, Monsters by Niklas Radstorm (2024), Neighborhood 3 by Jennifer Haley (2023), Yolo by Matthew Bulgo (2022).
